The USA Pro Cycling Challenge Bike Race is just 10 days away! And excitment is mounting. The Prologue to the race starts Monday, August 22nd in Colorado Springs.
Stage 1 of the actual race begins Tuesday morning, August 23rd, over the Continental Divide in Salida, Colorado. The racers will leave Salida at 10am and head west over Monarch Pass via US Highway 50 and will pass through the City of Gunnison around 1:00 P.M. The racers will turn north on Colorado Highway 135, in the heart of Gunnison's downtown, and will head north on 135 to the towns of Crested Butte and end in Mt. Crested Butte.
Traffic on Highway 50 westbound from Salida will be interrupted from approximately 11:30am until 2:30pm. Eastbound traffic will also be delayed for up to two hours during this time. All road closures will be "manned" by Colorado State Patrol officers/vehicles. Traffic on Highway 135 will be stopped between Gunnison and Crested Butte - both north and southbound - beginning at approximately 1:30pm and will continue until 4:30pm or later.
Stage Two - the Queen Stage - will start in Gunnison at 10:00am on Tuesday, August 24th. Highway 135 from Gunnison to Almont will be closed beginning at approximately 9:30am until 11:30am. Cottonwood Pass from Taylor Park to the summit and into Buena Vista will be closed all day.
Plan accordingly is you travel in the Gunnison Valley these two days. The best bet is to relax, stay in Gunnison, enjoy the festivities, cheer on the racers and don't travel on the highways until late Wednesday afternoon!
