Whatcha Gonna Do?

As the old song goes...  And there is a whole lot going on in Gunnison this weekend! 
Start off your weekend with the 1st Friday Gallery Crawl at 5pm in downtown Gunnison.  You can enjoy art, music, refreshments and visit with your friends and visitors.  Find that perfect piece of art for your livingroom!  Pick up a brochure at the Gunnison Gallery, the Gunnison Arts Center or any of the participating galleries or restaurants.  While at the Arts Center, enjoy the free Fridays @ 5" live music on the patio.  Enjoy a glass of wine or your favorite malt beverage and then have dinner at one of Gunnison's great restaurants and cafes.  Whatever your taste - you can find it.  Once your tummy is full, head back over to the Arts Center and enjoy the annual  melodrama production.  This year it's Blame it on the Pony Express".  After the drama, head south out of Gunnison to the Gunnison Valley Observatoryand learn about "The Gas Giants".  There is observing of the night sky through the dome-housed 30" and samaller telescopes following the astronomy program.
Saturday morning, enjoy an early morning bike ride or run, then grad a cup of your favorite coffe at one of Gunnison's home-owned coffee houses.  Breakfast at one of the local restaurants should satisfy your hunger pangs.  At 9:30am, stroll over to the Gunnison Farmers' Market and pick up some delicious and healthy produce, baked goods, jams, jellies, crafts of all kinds and even fire baked pizza.
If Archery is your game, the West Elk Archers will be holsing a Benefit Shoot at the Gunnison State Wildlife Area on Saturday.  Put an apple oon your head - JUST KIDDING - and head out and watch.   
Saturday is your chance to out get into Gunnison - your "BaseCamp of the Rocky Mountains".  You can fly fish, lake or stream fish, hike, boat, waterski, sail, kayak, raft, swim, mountain bike, road bike, climg, ride your horse, or just sit in the sunshine and enjoy the summer.  If you want to be nostalgic about the good old days or want to learn something about Gunnison's heritage, the Pioneer Museum on the east end of Tomichi has fascinating displays of Gunnison's early days.  You can even ring the steam locomotive's bell. 
Satuday night you can once again catch the Gunnison Arts Center's Melodrama or watch some falling stars out of the Gunnison Observatory after dark. Down at the Rodeo Grounds, you can also attend the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Fundraiser Banquet and Auction.  Whew - tired yet?
Sunday morning, savor a leisurely breakfast at one of Gunnison restaurants, cafes or coffee houses.  You can also attend services at one of Gunnison's many churches.  Take a bike ride or hike on the miles of maintained trails at the City's VanTuyl Ranch, located at the east end of Spencer Avenue.  Then take the kids fishing at Pac-Man Pond located in Jorgensen Park, 501 East Tomichi Avenue (East Highway 50) 
Finish out the day by packing or buying a picnic supper and settle back in your lawnchairs at the Arts Center's weekly free Sundays @ 6 free concert in Legion Park.  check out the City's website for more information on many of these activities www.cityofgunnison-co.gov

It's the Weekend!

After an explosively delightful Independence Day Holiday, it's time to enjoy a fun-filled Gunnison Weekend!  And there's a lot going on!  

This evening, Friday, July 5th, kicks off with the First Friday Art and Music Walk, in downtown Gunnison starting at 5pm.  There's music, refreshments, along with fantastic and diverse art works, showcased at 11 galleries and businesses.  Stop in the Gunnison Gallery or the Gunnison Arts Center and pickup your Art Walk guide.  There will be a drawing for art at the end of the evening.



Ready for Cattlemen's Days!

Over at the Fred Field Western Heritage Center at the Rodeo Grounds (275 S. Spruce Street) starting at 6pm, is the Cattlemen's Days Kick-Off Dinner Dance! 

That's right - it's Cattlemen's Days in Gunnison!  Take your little buckaroos to the kickoff dinner and dance!  It's for the entire family. 
When the sun goes down and you're looking for a later night venue, head south of Gunnison to the Gunnison Valley Observatory for an astronomy program on the fasinating discoveries of the Hubble Telescope and then enjoy public viewing of the Gunnison night sky through the silver-dome housed, 30" telescope.  It's eductional and relaxing. Bring a jacket, it can get chilly once the sun goes down. 

Annual Trough Balloon Rally

Saturday morning kicks off EARLY, at 5:30am, with the launch of the brilliantly-colored hot air balloons from Jorgensen Park along East Highway 50.  After "chasing" the balloons, stop for your favorite coffee and breakfast at one of Gunnison's hearty breakfast spots. 
The 4-H Horse Show then starts at 8am at the Rodeo Grounds.  It's quite a show of these talented and hard-working young people.  Heading back "up town" at 9:30am to the 100 Block of East Virginia Avenue in the heart of downtown, where you can select fresh produce, natural meats, delectable baked goods, ecletic crafts and a selection of Western Colorado wines at the weekly Gunnison Farmers' Market.  There's also prepared foods and lively music. 
After this busy, fun-filled morning, recharge with a delicious lunch at one of Gunnison diverse eateries and then head out into the Gunnison Valley - your "Base Camp of the Rocky Mountains"!  The area offers a myriad of outdoor recreational opportunities.  There's just about everything you can imagine to enjoy the great outdoors in Gunnison.  


Ready for the Horse Show

After dinner, you can go back out to the Gunnison Valley Observatory and learn out "Comets, Meteors and Asteroids - Oh My!"  Kids may get an opportunity to create a meteor impact crater or two and to touch an actual meteor!  The program starts at dusk with telescope viewing following the program at dark. 

Sunday, July 7th, is the Cattlemen's Days Open Horse Show at the Rodeo Grounds.  Dust off your cowboy or girl hat and your boots and enjoy the show.  Finish out the weekend by relaxing in your lawn chair at Legion Park for the Gunnison Art Center's "Sundays at 6" free conert series. 

Late Summer Weekend

The air is getting crisp and there is a feel of fall in the air.  But...there is still a lot to do outside this weekend!

Tonight, Friday, September 7th is the First Friday Gallery Crawl, starting at 5pm in downtown Gunnison.  Stroll the sidewalks and check out the fabulous and thought-provoking art at the numerous galleries and venues.  Enjoy some music and light refreshments before heading to one of the great restaurants in Gunnison.  There's everything from chinese to italian to mexican to BBQ to vegetarian to fusion to good old american cuisine offered at a good variety of establishments.  Check one out!
As the sun sets, drive south of town to the Gunnison Valley Observatory.  Tonight and Saturday night's public viewing through the 30" telescope will be started off with a classroom talk on "Stellar Evolution".  Find out how stars are "born" and how they evolve through their lifetimes.  It's fascinating!  You can then see the rings of Saturn or perhaps the "Ring Nebula".  Check out Western State's own constellation - the "W" shaped "Cassiopeia" constellation! 

Saturday morning, ride your townie to the Gunnison Farmers' Market on the 100 block of East Virginia downtown.  The fall harvest is coming in and you can select from a plethora of fresh produce, baked goods, organic beef and meats, wonderful arts and crafts, and wines.  You can also select lunch from a variety of food vendors on hand. 

After picking up your healthy fruits and veggies, get out side and enjoy some of the great outdoor adventures to be had in the Valley!  After all - Gunnison is the Base Camp to the Rocky Mountains!  You can't go wrong with a bike ride, trail hike, fishing, boating or admiring the changing autumn leaves!  Have a safe and fun weekend!

Its Almost the Weekend

Tonight, Friday, July 20th at 5pm, the air downtown will be filled with the music of Mark Berenson, entertaining on the Gunniosn Arts Center patio for the Fridays @ 5 Concert Series.  The Arts Center is located on the southeast corner of Tomichi and Main Street in the heart of town.  Libations are available for purchase on the patio. Wind down from your hectic week at this venue. 
After enjoying music and then dinner at one of Gunnison's great restaurants, head south of town to the Gunnison Valley Observatory.  This weekend's education series is "Galaxies in our Local Neighborhood".  The facility gates open for publlic viewing on Friday and Saturday evenings, at 7:30pm, the lecture starts at 8:30pm and then there's viewing through the Observatory's 30", dome-housed telescope once the skies are dark and clear.  Admission is by donation and remeber to bring a jacket.

Gunnison Farmers' Market

Saturday morning after enjoying delicious coffee and breakfast, stroll over to the Saturday Farmer's Market downtown on East Virginia Avenue.  The Market opens at 9:30am and goes until 1:30pm.  There's fresh local and western slope produce, baked goods, Olathe wine, flowers, arts, crafts, and a even a chair massage can be enjoyed! 
Saturday is also the best day for the public to enjoy the Annual Jack Russell Terrier Trials at the Fred Field Western Heritage Center at the Rodeo Grounds, south of Safeway.  These frisky and smart dogs are fun to watch and it's free!  Bring the family but leave your 4-footed friends at home. 
The weekend is also a great time to enjoy all of the great outdoor recreation that Gunnison - the Base Camp of the Rocky Mountains - has to offer.  Take your pick of multiple adventures!  There's fun for everyone!
Sunday morning at 9am, is the start of the 38th Annual AAUW Art in the Park at Legion Park.  Stroll around the park, listen to some great music, enjoy breakfast and then lunch yummies, and check out the talented artists and their offerings.  This is a juried art show and there are several new artists participating this year.
Finish our your weekend at Legion Park, with the musical entertainment of "Workin' Progress".  This free concert (donations are collected and greatly appreciated) is hosted by the Gunnison Arts Center.  Enjoy your weekend!

It's the Weekend

Start your Gunnison weekend at 5pm by heading over to the Gunnison Arts Center "Fridays @ 5" courtyard patio and enjoy the music of "The Porchlights".  Then enjoy some of Gunnison's great restaurants, cafes, bistros, diners, taverns and brewpub.  You'll always see someone you know or make some new acquaintances! 

Gunnison Observatory at night

Tonight, Friday, June 15th, is the 2012 season opening of the Gunnison Valley Observatory.  The observatory, located south of Gunnison at 2804 CR 38 (Gold Basin Road) across from the Hartman Rocks Recreation Area, will be open every Friday and Saturday evening for public viewing.  The gates will open at 7:30pm and classroom presentations on astronomy topics will commence.  This weekend, learn about "Saturn and the Gas Planets".  When the stars come out, there'll be viewing of the night sky through the dome-housed 30" telescope and through smaller telescopes on the patio.  Be sure and bring a jacket, evenings can be cool.  Admission is by donation.
Saturday and Sunday will see talented athletes participate in the annual "Diamonds in the Rockies" girls' fast pitch softball tournament at the Jorgensen Park fields.  The Gunnison girls teams will compete as well as teams from all across Colorado.  Go out and enjoy the action! 
In between games, visit some of Gunnison's retail shops.   You can find everything from a new townie, flyfishing rod, jewelery, stylish clothes and shoes, and most everything else you can imagine.  You can also stretch your legs and swim, hike, rock climb, bike, fish, raft, kayak, walk, boat on the river or the lake, waterski, and just enjoy the Gunnison High Country.  We're your Base Camp to the Rocky Mountains!  Once the sun sets, you can catch a movie at the Ruby Cinema, located in the Western State Center on campus or on Friday and Saturday night, you can enjoy "Old time Radio Theater" at the Gunnison Arts Center, located on the southwest corner of Main (Hwy 135) and Tomichi (Hwy 50).  Doors open at 7pm. 
Finish off your busy weekend by vegging out at Legion Park and listening to the GAC "Sundays @ 7" concert.  Bring your lawn chair, blanket and some munchies while you listen to the music of "Better Late Than Never".  Enjoy your weekend!

Ride the Rockies Gather!

The participants in the 27th Annual "Ride the Rockies" Bike Tour gather in Gunnison Friday and Saturday.  The 442 mile road bike ride starts with an opening ceremony at 7:30am on Sunday, June 10th. The riders will then head west on HIghway 50 and then ride over Black Mesa next to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to Paonia.  The bike tour travels over five mountain passes, through two National Parks, and travels over the highest continuous paved byway in the U.S. (Trail Ridge Road) before it ends in Ft. Collins on Saturday, June 16th.
Some of the riders will be camping and staging at the Gunnison Community School lawn at the NW corner of N. 11th Street and West Spencer Avenue.  Others will enjoy the comforts of the local hotels and motels. 
The City of Gunnison and Gunnison Country Chamber of Commerce are providing entertainment for the riders on Saturday, June 9th from noon until 9pm at the IOOF Park in downtown Gunnison.  The festivities will include rockin' music by classic rock band "Workin Progress".  Food vendors will include Inner Fire Pizza, Creative Catering, F-Bar BBQ, Lucky Dog's Gourmet Hot Dogs and of course beer.  The riders will have the opportunity to check out Gunnison's fine shops and sporting goods emporiums, enjoy the delicious and varied restaurants and cafes, sip some locally brewed coffe or locally brewed beer, and enjoy the laid back Gunnison summer vibe.  Locals are welcome and encouraged to come downtown and check out the action.
Ending the weekend events, it'll be time to kick back and enjoy the Gunnison Arts Center's "Sundays @ 6" free concert featuring "Doctor Robert" at the Legion Park Pavillion.  Bring your lawn chair or blanket to relax and revive.

BIG Weekend Ahead

There's a lot to do in the Gunnison Valley this weekend!  Friday night, start off the Memorial Day Holiday weekend by visiting one of Gunnison's great restaurants, taverns, or brew pub. 

Catchin' a Fish at the Kids Derby

Saturday morning, start with coffee at one of the great locally-owned coffee houses.  then starting at 10am on Saturday morning, May 26th, take the kids over to Jorgensen Park for the Annual Kid's Fishing Derby and Outdoor Recreation Event.  It's free!  Representatives from the Forest Service, National Park Service, Elks Foundation, Gunnison Kiwanis, Bureau of Land Management, the Colorado Division of Parks & Wildlife, Wild Turkey Federation, Trout Unlimited and many, many more will be on hand to teach the kids about outdoor recreation.  Free fishing poles will be available for the kids to try out their luck in recently-stocked Pac-Man Pond.  A free lunch, grilled by Amerigas, will be available as well. 

Also in Jorgensen Park will be the Gunnison  Chamber-sponsored Outdoor Adventure Expo.  A variety of Recreation and Sports Vendors will have display booths and seminars on all sorts of outdoor recreation.  The Expo runs until 3pm. 
Saturday morning signals the start of the RAGE IN THE SAGE 2012 Events.  A shotgun start at 9am, will see 350 mountain bike riders race from Main and Virginia on their way west on Highway 50 to Hartman Rocks.  This race is the Half-Growler, a 32 mile, mountain bike race around the challenging trails of Hartman Rocks.  The awards ceremony for the Half-Growler Race will be at 3pm at the IOOF Park.  Even if you're not a mountain bike rider, head over to the IOOF Park from Noon to 5pm and visit the food vendors, beer garden (if you're 21 or over and can prove it) and listen to the music.  Also on Saturday, back out of Hartman Rocks starting at 1pm is the KEEN "Rippin Chix" Bike Camp.

Starting Line of the Gunnison Growler Race

Rage in the Sage continues on Sunday morning at 7am with the shotgun start of the Full Growler, 64-mile mountain bike race.  The riders will again start at Main St. and Virginia Aven. and once again head out to Hartman Rocks.  The Full Growler awards ceremony will start at 5:15pm at the IOOF Park in downtown Gunnison.  Food vendors, a beer garden and live music will also be available Sunday afternoon at  IOOF Park starting at Noon.
The Gran Fondo Bike Ride to Crested Butte starts at 7:30am on Sunday following the Full Growler start.  Riders will cycle north on Highway 135 to Crested Butte and back.  The Gran Fondo is a fundraiser for Gunnison Country Partners. 
Rounding out the Rage in the Sage Events is the WSC Cross-Country and Track and Field Teams- sponsored Sage Burner Running Race at Hartman Rocks.  Lace up your running shoes and tackle the 25k or 50k running race.  The races start at 7am at the Hartman Rocks base area.  For more information on any of the Rage in the Sage events go to http://www.gunnisontrails.com/ and click on "Races" then the  "The Original Growler" line.

Also featured this weekend, many Gunnison businesses will be hosting their annual Memorial Day sidewalk sales.  Go shopping Saturday, Sunday AND Monday for great gifts, clothing and fun items.
And...you can always fish or boat at the lake or fly fish on the river, water ski, wake board or sail at Blue Mesa, kayak the Taylor or Gunnison to the Whitewater Park, raft, hike the in-town or backcountry trails, motorcycle, four-wheel, check out and photograph the wildlife, and just plain enjoy Gunnison - Base Camp to the Rocky Mountains!

BUSY Weekend

Spring is here and there's a lot happening in Gunnison.  Tonight, Friday, May 4th, is the First Friday Art & Music Walk.  Starting at 5pm, stroll around starting downtown to the 7 participating venues and enjoy art and music.  The Gunnison Gallery, Castle Creek Guitars, Rocky Mountain Frames & Trophies, Beth Marcue's Studio, Mocha's Coffeehouse, The Blue Thunder Circle Art Lab and the Gunnison Arts Center will all be participating.  Locations of the participating sites can be found at the Gunnison Arts Center situated at the corner of South Tomichi and Main Street.  There's creative art, fun, music and food. 

EARLY Saturday and Sunday, fishermen from all over the state will be converging on Blue Mesa Reservoir for the Annual Kiwanis Blue Mesa Fishing Tournament.  Each team of 2 fishermen, will weigh in their biggest four fish each day.  After weigh-in on Sunday, the team with the heaviest combined fish weight (not the fishermen!) win $1,000 in prize money.  Generous local businesses and sponsors also donate great door prizes for the event.  Funds raised from the annual event go to support Gunnison youth activities throughout the year. 

10:00 AM, Saturday morning, May 5th, is Western State College Commencement!  Graduates will receive their hard-earned diplomas in WSC's Mountaineer Bowl.  Congratulations to all of the graduates and their very supportive families and friends!

Saturday, May 5th is also the appearance of the SUPERMOON!  The full moon will occur when the elliptical orbit of the moon is closest to the earth (just a mere 221,802 miles away or 15,300 miles closer than average).  The full moon will appear largest when it rises just above the horizon.  The moon actually remains the same size as it rises into the night sky, it just appears largest when it is closest to the horizon!  Go out an howl!

Sunday, Monday, & Tuesday, May 6th, 7th and 8th, Western State College will be hosting the 2012 RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Mountaineer Bowl.  Admission is free to watch 7 teams from the top 25 ranked teams in the U.S.  In addition to running, there's javelin, shotput, decathlon, heptathlon and more!  If you can't make it to the Bowl in person, listen to the action on local KEJJ 98.3 radio. 

Of course, there's always fishing, hiking, biking, running, or just relaxing in the glorious Gunnison Valley.  Enjoy the weekend! 

Gunnison Weekend

The National Weather Service is predicting a sunny and warming weekend ahead. As always -there's lots to do in Gunnison!
There should be great spring skiing at the local ski areas or backcountry skiiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling at higher elevations. There is still ice fishing at Blue Mesa Reservoir. Be sure and take your sunglasses and sunscreen! It will be bright out on the ice. There's ice skating at the indoor Jorgensen Ice Rink and the covered outdoor rink (if it doesn't get too warm), climbing on the indoor climbing wall and of course swimming in the leisure and lap pools at the Gunnison Community Center. With the sunny weather, take a hike, jog, or bike ride on the City trails and bike lanes, or hit the basketball courts at Legion or the Meadows Parks. In the evening, the Gunnison Arts Center is presenting their annual "SonofaGunn" play, Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week and next week. This year's production is entitled "The Producers - Way, Way, Off Broadway". Go the Gunnison Art Center's website for more information.
Saturday afternoon at 2pm, the 60th Annual Firemen's Concert Series continues at WSC's Taylor Auditorium with the Western Slope Choral Festival. Admission is by donation and supports the Gunnison Volunteer Fire Department.
After enjoying your favorite recreational pastime, visit the local shops for unique clothes, gifts, sporting goods or home decor, and inviting restaurants to round out your day. Several of the local hot spots will be featuring live music this weekend. And, you can always catch the movie at the Ruby Cinema in the WSC College Center on campus. Check our their website. Don't forget...spring ahead your clocks late Saturday night before going to bed. Daylight Savings Time starts at 2:00 A.M. early Sunday morning. It'll be hard getting out of bed on Monday morning, but it will stay lighter in the evening. Have a great weekend.

Busy Weekend Ahead

It's the start of the Holiday Season in Gunnison.
5pm tonight, Friday, December 2nd, sees the First Friday Galley Crawl at a variety of locations downtown. Stop in and view art, enjoy meeting with the artists, friends and neighbors and enjoy some appetizers and holiday cheer.
Starting at 5:30pm is the Gunnison Chamber of Commerce-sponsored "Gingerbread Christmas". The first three blocks of north Main Street will be blocked off to traffic until 8pm. The Night of Lights features carolling & holiday music, bonfires, roasting marshmallows, and seeing the festive light displays. Santa will make his appearance starting at 6:30pm and will make his way to the 100 Block of South Main Street where the big City Christmas tree will be lit.
Saturday morning at 10am in the lobby of the Bank of the West (on the corner of North Main Street and West Virginia Avenue) you can exchange $80 in cash for $100 in Gunnison Greenbacks. $100 for only $80 - what a savings! This holiday money must be spent at Gunnison businesses on Saturday and Sunday, December 3rd and 4th. Many businesses will be hosting Holiday Open Houses with great deals on many Christmas gift ideas!
The Gunnison Arts Center is hosting its annual Gala on Saturday night under the heated tent in front of the Arts Center by the Christmas Tree on South Main Street.
After an exhausting day of holiday shopping, head out to one of Gunnison's great restaurants or eateries, enjoy a glass of wine or a microbrew at one of the local taverns or bistros or catch the movie at the Ruby Cinema on the WSC campus. Want to burn off some of those holiday goodies calories? Head over the Gunnison Community Center Aquatics Facility for a fun splash!
If you want to be more active, you can still hike or bike at Hartman Rocks or on the VanTuyl Ranch Trails. Soon enough - there will be snow for some skiing and sledding activities! There is also public skating at the indoor ice rink in Jorgensen Park. Check the schedule for available public skating times.

Summer is Finally Here!

It was a glorious, busy summer weekend in Gunnison. Friday night kicked off with great live music on the Gunnison Arts Center patio. This was followed by many with a delicious dinner at one of Gunnison's fantastic restaurants, bistros, wine bars and brew pubs.

Friday and Saturday night had awesome clear-sky viewing at the Gunnison Valley Observatory, located south of Gunnison on Gold Basin Road. A tour of the solar system took place with a special visit to the planet Saturn. The Observatory is open every Friday and Saturday night for public night sky viewing.

Saturday morning dawned with clear, sunny skies. The Gunnison River Festival kicked off at the Gunnison Whitewater Park, just west of the City limits, with opening remarks from City Councilor Bill Nesbitt and other dignitaries. Food and product vendors were set up providing great food and information on watersports. Many wet and wild competitions were held during the day. One of the newest sports is Stand Up Paddling (SUP) where the rider stands up and "surfs" the river on a surf board with a paddle. The freestyle competition featured many local and out of town water athletes competing with awesome maneuvers on the river's waves. Downriver competitions and events filled out the weekend on Sunday morning on the upper and lower Taylor River. Closing ceremonies took place at the Almont Resort. A great time was had by participants and spectators alike! Many thanks to the sponsors and volunteers of this fun event.

Saturday morning saw opening day of the annual Gunnison Farmers' Market. The market, featuring local produce, crafts, music and baked goods, takes place every Saturday morning through mid-October. The Market is located on the 100 Block of East Virginia by the IOOF Park.

The weekend ended with some "locally-grown" music at the Arts Center's "Sundays at 6" event at Legion Park. A festive crowd enjoyed music ranging from Waylon Jennins to Jethro Tull to "Funkytown"! Many enjoyed a picnic supper or barbeque along with the music. Gunnison - it's a great place to be!

City Council Happenings

After a busy summer weekend in the City, the City Council will be addressing a number of issues on Tuesday night at 7pm in the Council Chambers of City Hall.

Council will be talking with the Gunnison Arts Center about the "Sundays at 6" event held Sunday evenings at Legion Park throughout the summer months. Council will take action on a sewer slipline contract, an easement agreement on Bidwell Avenue, and a letter of support for the Historic Designation of the American Legion Hut building in Legion Park. Council will also approve the contract with Great Outdoors Colorado for improvements at the South Teller Street Baseball field and approve the internal transfer of budgeted 2011 funds. The City Clerk will present the Clerk's Department semi-annual report.
