That's right! The much anticipated first annual GUNNI HIGH TRI take place tomorrow, Saturday, September 7th, 2013, starting at 9:30am, at the Gunnison Community Cener, 200 E. Spencer Avenue in Gunnison.
Participants wil compete as an individual or as a team.
The athletes will SWIM 500 yards (.28 mile) in the pool, then BIKE 13 miles and finish up with an invigorating 3.2 mile RUN on the trails above the WSCU Bowl. The finish line is at the Community Center.
Come out and cheer on your favorite Gunni Triathlete. Good luck to you ALL!

Are You Training?
Are you in training yet? If not, you should be! The first annual Gunni High Tri sprint triathlon is rapidly approaching!
On Saturday, September 7th, starting at 9:30am, participants will swim 500 years in the Community Center Pool, bike 13 miles around the beautiful Gunnison Valley, and then run 3.2 miles on the near-by Signal Peak trails and Western State Colorado University campus.
Registration is $50.00 per participant or $50.00 for up to three-person team with each participant doing one leg of the "Tri".
Following the timed events, there will be a fun-filled awards festival and after event party at the Community Center. Get registered by calling 970-641-8060 or stopping by the Gunnison Community Center at 200 East Spencer Avenue in Gunnison.

Even the kids can compete. Starting off the event weekend will be a Healthy Kids Triathlon on Friday, September 6th starting at 5:30pm. This event has two divisions: the younger division for 3 to 7 year olds and the older division for 8+ year old kids. Two routes will be available for varying skill levels. Although Gunnison County has implemented a precautionary Stage 1 Fire Ban, effective this morning, Monday, June 24th, visitors are still able to have small campfires in established campgrounds that provide metal and concrete fire rings. So as of now, you can still make those s'mores and sing songs around the campfire. We just ask you to be VERY careful. There are plenty of Forest Service and Commercial Campgrounds in the area. If camping out isn't your cup of tea, Gunnison has lots of hotels, motels, condos, and cabins, from luxurious to rustic!

Ana's Plege Bike Safety Event
The 2nd Annual Ana's Pledge Bike Safety Event for children Pre-K through 8th grade will take place this Saturday, May 4th, from 9am to Noon at Lake School, 800 N. Boulevard in Gunnison.
Registration opens at 9am closes at 11:30am. Kids will ride the course, learn how to ride safely, obey traffic signs, and how to avoid hazards. There will also be a bike inspection station to detect possible bike defects and they can register their bikes with the Gunnsion PD. ALL Participants must weat a bike helmet!
Participants will receive a t-shirt, safety information, refreshments and will pledge to ride their bikes SAFELY!.
Before the summer biking season starts in full-swing, bring the kids out for this fun and educational event.

10 Things to "Fall" Into in Gunnison
Fall is in the air and there are lots of things to choose from to "Fall Into". Here are 10 ideas..
10 - Fall into biking? That doesn't sound good but it's sure a lot of fun! Grab your trusty mountain bike or motorcycle and head south of Gunnison to the Hartman Rocks Recreation Area. There are miles and miles of hiking, single-track and motorcycle trails to challenge all skill levels - even the kids. There's vehicle parking, restrooms and picnic tables at the base area. 9 - Fall into history at the Gunnison Pioneer Society's Museum located at the east end of Gunnsion on Highway 50 across from Legion Park. The museum has some of the most comprehensive displays in the State of Colorado on everything from military history to clothing to railroading. 8 - Fall into fitness by power walking the historic VanTuyl Ranch Trails. The City-owned ranch, located in the northwest corner of town off North 11th Street, offers several miles of flat, packed-gravel trails, perfect for walking or biking. The trails pass through the historic VanTuyl Ranch, a working sustainable-centered ranching operation. When you walk the trails with your dog - remember - they must be on a leash! There are also stunning views of the Palisades formation over the Gunnison River to the west.
7 - Fall into gold - golden aspens that is - all around the Gunnison Valley. Check out the blog post below for scenic leaf-peeping trips you can take. The trees are only golden for a few precious weeks, so get out and enjoy their grandeur.
6 - Fall into your rubber waders and Fly Fish the Gunnison River. There are several excellent fly shops in Gunnison and even though the water level is low, they can advise you on the best techniques for catching that wiley trout or kokanee salmon. Head to the west end of Tomichi Avenue (Highway 50) and access the river at the City's Gunnison Riverway. There's parking, restrooms and a covered picnic pavillion plus easy access to fly-fishing.
5 - Fall into the clear, starry, night sky at the Gunnison Valley Observatory. After a long day of hiking, fishing and enjoying the Gunnison Valley, stop by the Observatory on Saturday evenings through October 20th, look through the 30" dome-housed telescope or the other smaller scopes on hand, and see celestial objects you've never seen before. 4 - Fall with a splash into the leisure or lap pools at the Gunnison Community Center. The two pools located at the Gunnison Recreation Center offer something for everyone. Ana's Pledge Bike Safety Rodeo
Bring the kids out to Ana's Pledge Bike Safety Rodeo on Saturday morning, starting at 9am , at Lake School in Gunnison. Each child must have a bike helmet. A wonderful group of volunteers, funded by generous donations from many community organizations and churches, will be instructing the children of the Gunnison Valley on how to ride their bicycles safely. This is very important now that school is back in session and the kids are riding their bikes to and from school and home and to their after school activities.
The Bike Safety Rodeo is being held in memory of and to honor Ana Mendez. Bring your children out for a fun and educational event!

Gunnison Named "Bicycle Friendly Community"
The League of American Bicyclists announced the latest round of Bicycle Friendly Communities and the City of Gunnison was named a SILVER LEVEL Bicycle Friendly Community!
League President Andy Clarke stated.."the City of Gunnison recognizes that simple steps to make bicycling safe and comfortable pay huge dividends in civic, community and economic development." There are now 214 Bicycle Friendly Communities (BFCs) in 47 states across America. The Silver BFC Award recognizes Gunison's commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies.
According to City Manager Ken Coleman, "The citizens of our community and City of Gunnison staff have worked relentlessly to create a safe environment for bicyclists and pedestrians. Our Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee provides guidance in eduacation, enforcement, infrastructure, and events that promote this effort and are proud to have moved from Honorable Mention to Silver Level."

Busy Weekend Ahead
There's another busy weekend ahead in Gunnison.
Saturday morning, starting at 11am, open singing auditions will take place at Gunnison High School. The winning singer or singers will perform the National Anthem at the start of Gunnison's "Queen Stage" of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge Bike Race on Wednesday morning, August 22nd. The race will bring international televised exposure to the singer.
The Annual Sage Grouse Festival will take place starting at 8am at the Western State College Center. There will be something for everyone! Events include education on the Gunnison Sage Grouse, a 5k/10k Fun Run/Walk, Mountain Bike Race for all ages and a Kids 1500 run. All races start on the south lawn of the College Center. There will also be a doggy distraction course, demonstartions, a nature photography workshop, chili lunch, exhibits including live raptors, art, live music, kids activities, and dog events!
Ducks Unlimited will be holding their annual event on Saturday evening at the Fred Field Western Heritage Center.
Also on Saturday evening, there will be a Community Dance at the Elks Club on South Main Street from 6 to 9pm. Put on your dancing shoes and enjoy the fun!
On Sunday afternoon starting at 3pm, you can attend a free WSC Faculty Artist violin and piano receital at Quigley Hall on the WSC Campus.
If you have time inbetween events and activities, catch a round of golf at the Dos Rios Golf Course, indoor climb, shoot hoops or a game of pool or take a swim at the Gunnison Community/Aquatics Center or hit the local trails on foot or your bike at Hartman Rocks or the City's Van Tuyl Ranch. There's always something to do.

A Fun Time Was Had By All
It was a rainy but fun weekend in Gunnison! The Easter Bunny was in attendance at the 2nd Annaul Underwater Easter Egg Hunt at the Community Pool on Saturday. 2
75 participants had a great time hunting for 2200 cement filled eggs, 4 golden eggs and 1 "Monster Egg". It weighed 10 pounds! 20 pounds of candy was given out. The kids enjoyed a "bouncy castle" and fun games like guessing the total number of jelly beans and "Bunny Bingo". Thanks to the Community Center personnel for all of their work in hosting this fun event.
