Thinking of Spring

The gray skies have cleared and it's a beautiful, clear, blue-skied day. Everyone is out running, biking or walking the dogs. Of course, it's still only 30 degrees - but we're "tough" here in the high country!
And a day like today reminds us that Spring is just around the corner. The Gunnison Parks & Recreation's Spring Program Brochure will be available on Friday, March 2nd. You can pick up a hardcopy brochure at the Gunnison Community Center, City Hall or at the Ice Rink.

Program registration will start on Monday, March 5th. Winter Fun Underway




Head over to Jorgensen Park this afternoon. The Annual Winter Carnival is underway today with lots of snowy fun taking place. The event will end with the bone-chilling annual "Polar Bear" Plunge. Take your swimsuit - if you're Brrrrrrrave enough!!!

Winter Carnival

Fat Tuesday, Tuesday, February 21st, is WINTER CARNIVAL. Come and celebrate all the sports that make winter great! Activities are from 9am to 4pm at Jorgensen Park. All events are FREE and open to fans of all ages and ability levels. Helmets and signed waiver forms are required.
The schedule of events is as follows:
Biathlon: 9am to 10am
Snowmobile Joring: (Ski, Snowboard, Tube) 10am to Noon
Ski/Snowboard Jib Fest: 10am to Noon at the jibpark north of the covered rink
Hockey Skills Challenge: (obstacle Course, speed skating and accuracy) 1pm to 3pm
Polar Bear Dive: Upon Completion of all Events: Age groups: 6 & under; 7-9; 10-13; and 14-18 years

President's Day Holiday

This Monday, February 20th, is a federal holiday - President's Day - and most City offices will be closed to observe the holiday. RE1J Schools and Western State College will not be in session on Monday as well.
If your refuse is normally picked up on Monday, it will be picked up on Tuesday, February 21st. Call Public Works at 641-8020 if you have questions.
As always, public safety never stops and the Gunnison Police Department (but not PD Records), Fire Department and Dispatch/Communications will be operational on Monday. Thanks to these employees for protecting our community 24/7!

Snowy Tuesday

It's a gray and slightly snowy morning in Gunnison. Hopefully we will see some more snow. As our Public Works Director says, we need the moisture.
This evening at 7pm, City Council will hold their Regular Session meeting. They will be hearing the 2011 Municipal Court Report from Municipal Court Judge James McDonald. Finance Director Wendy Hanson will present the 2011 City Financial Report. An amendment to the City's Employee Manual concerning employee holiday compensation will be discussed and acted upon. There will be first reading of Ordinance No. 1 - which is a text amendment to the City's Land Development Code, allowing for conditional use retail sales in the Industrial Zone District of the City. To finish out the meeting, staff and City Councilors will give informational repoprts on City issues and the various meetings they attended.
The public is welcome and encouraged to attend City Council meetings. They are held in the Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 201 W. Virginia Avenue in Gunnison.

Friday Moonlight Fun

The Gunnison Nordic Club is hosting it's Moonlight Ski and Bonfire Event at the City-owned VanTuyl Ranch, located just northeast of town.
The event starts at 6:30pm with skiing on the ranch nordic trails. Park in the Community School lot (behind the school at 11th Street & Spencer Avenue) and head north on the trails. There will be hot cocoa and treats at the bonfire. Go to http://www.gunnisonnordic.org/ for more information. It's a great start to a fun weekend in Gunnison. Get out an enjoy the snow!

Ride the Rockies

On Sunday, February 5th, The Denver Post announced the City of Gunnison is the host start City for the 27th Annual Ride the Rockies Bike Tour. Bicyclists from around Colorado and the country will gather in Gunnison on Saturday, June 9th and will head west out of the City on Sunday, June 10th for a 79 mile bike ride over the North Rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to Hotchkiss. The Ride ends 5 days later on Friday, June 15th in Ft. Collins. Go to: http://www.ridetherockies.com/ for more information.

Skate Park Public Meeting

The City of Gunnison Recreation Department and "Team Pain Skate Parks" invite the public skating community to attend a community design input session for the antipated addition to the Jorgensen Skate Park. The meeting will be Wednesday, February 8th at 6:00 P.M. at the Gunnison Community Center, 200 East Spencer Avenue in Gunnision. Come give your input!
